What's Going on with Mining in the Keweenaw

“Mining in the UP: What is on the Horizon?" will be the subject of a public, online forum hosted by the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (KUUF) at 10:30 a.m., Sunday, May 12. Kathleen Heideman and Tom Grotenwohl will speak about different aspects of mining in the UP. On behalf of the Mining Action Group of the Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition, Heideman will share personal insights and technical updates on Eagle Mine, a controversial expansion proposed by Tilden Mine; exploration plans revealed by Talon Metals; what she calls the mineral lease "land grab" underway in the Western UP, and opportunities for concerned citizens to take action. Grotewohl is the founder of Protect Porkies (www.ProtectThePorkies.com). He authored a petition opposing the proposed Copperwood Mine, which can be seen at www.change.org/ProtectThePorkies. The Copperwood project is approximately 14 miles north of Wakefield. It would be the closest sulfide mine to Lake Superior in history, and it would mine on the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park property according to a press release from the Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition (UPEC). Grotewohl spends his time foraging mushrooms, plunking on his typewriter, and playing music around his off-grid homestead in Wakefield Township, in Gogebic County. He graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota with a degree in anthropology. Heideman is a writer, artist and environmentalist working in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. She is the author of A Brief Report on the Human Animal, and Psalms of the Early Anthropocene. Drawn to wild and threatened places, she works to defend them. Heideman serves on the board of the Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition. The forum is open to the public. It will only be on zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83975762265?pwd=TC9BcStaTDF4dFZOU2ZsUHhZTERoUT09
